From the early 90′s heyday of Toronto’s techno scene through to his current constant touring as a band member and programmer for Nelly Furtado and hip hop superstar Drake, Jason “DJ Shine” Spanu has delivered a brilliant history as a key player in the Canadian electronic music scene. With numerous singles, remixes, and compilation appearances under his belt, DJ Shine has made his reputation well known among some of the world’s top producers and artists. His performances as a live PA/DJ combination have rocked dance floors at huge events and underground jams all over the world.

DJ Shine’s new album Attention Deficit Disco and remix singles are gaining buzz among eclectic house DJs worldwide. The sounds on the album range from lush, deep house and slow motion nu-disco to spaced-out dub workouts and Balearic business. Easy, laid-back listening tracks sit side-by-side to dubby techno excursions and dreamy electronic beatscapes. Attention Deficit Disco is a diverse set of exciting tunes filled with melody and soul, sure to get the feet moving and the heart pumping.

When his schedule permits, Jason teaches his various production and performance techniques and we are lucky enough to have him visiting TARA in February. He will be guest speaking for our students on their Monday night lecture, but he has also agreed to put on a clinic for anyone interested, Sunday Feb. 12th, from 3-6:00 pm

From Far and Wide shoot at TARA

From Far and Wide visited our Ottawa Studios last week. This new show is seeking to redefine and reinvent Canadian music. They are travelling across Canada holding open calls and taking unedited web submissions in the search for the best Original Music.

Sean Gugula one of our TARA Toronto teachers approached us about getting involved in this program we jumped at the opportunity to host the first shooting of the show. Sean and the rest of his gang (Jeremy Panda, Renée Rodenkirchen, Mark Spicoluk, Don Kitchen and Katy Maravala) were the judging panel for the first round in Ottawa. TARA Grad Krystal Flindall and current TARA Students JC and Max were on hand to help with the recording as 4 bands battled it out. Who won? Well you’ll just have to check out the show when it airs…..

Members of the touring production of Disney’s THE LION KING paid our studios a visit recently to record an aria from fellow cast member and composer Omari Tau’s “Hans In Luck”. Nick Beaton (TARA Grad 2007) engineered the project.

Annihilator Rock the Studio

Metal icons Annihilator are in the studio again this summer rehearsing and preparing for their upcoming shows. 2011 marks Annihialtors first show in North America in 18 years and they have finally come home to Canada. Jeff Waters and co. hosted FAN DAY on July 7th at Raven St Studios (home of TARA), which was attended by selected “super fans”. Some were at the studio several hours before the sessions began, demonstrating their love of all things Annihilator. The Sounds of Summer

With school out for the summer it’s been all about the sessions for the last few months. Pleasant Park, David Irving and Omnium du Rock finalists Hemi Loco have all been recording through the summer, with a couple more big sessions booked for early August. Overdubbing guitars while wearing flip flops makes for sweet sounds…..

Autumns Canon wins the Big Money Shot

Autumns Canon, TARA band (2009), continues to do amazing things in the music scene. Shaun Francisco and former student and staff member Nick Beaton together with Mike Hogg, Mark Laforest, and Marty Sobb (a TARA instructor) are members of this amazing band who impressed the large crowds at their recent Bluesfest performance. They blew the other bands away in “The Big Money Shot” final in Ottawa to take 1st place and $150,000 of talent support from Live 88.5.

“Strong songwriting, powerful live performances. The band is poised to make big waves in 2011”. Lee Wagner, Newcap Radio and Live 88.5
